09 September 2025

An engagement session entitled “How US Tariffs Affect Brunei Darussalam" was convened on Monday, 8th September 2025, at the Theatre Hall, Ministry of Finance and Economy (MOFE). The session was chaired by Yang Mulia Awang Mohammad Harris bin Brigadier Jeneral (Rtd) Dato Paduka Haji Ibrahim, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Trade and Industry), MOFE.

The session brought together local companies that are currently exporting to the United States (US) with senior officials from the relevant departments under MOFE, including the Trade Division, the Industry and Business Ecosystem Division, the Royal Customs and Excise Department, the Research and Strategic Management Division, as well as the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB). The engagement aimed to assess the potential implications of the evolving US trade landscape, particularly the reintroduction of tariffs popularly known as the “Trump Tariffs" and discuss strategies to safeguard Brunei's export sector.

During the session, the Trade Division gave a presentation on the impact of recent US tariff measures on Brunei's exports. The presentation also touched on Brunei's trade relationship with the US, and highlighted the importance of exploring alternative markets through Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). This was followed by a presentation from BEDB, which shared how they can support Brunei businesses to explore new markets beyond the US. This includes helping with export advice, overseas promotion, and connecting local companies with international buyers.

The session concluded with an open discussion, where participating companies shared their concerns, experiences, and suggestions regarding the impact of US tariffs on their operations. This engagement session formed part of the Ministry's continuous efforts to strengthen Brunei Darussalam's trade ecosystem, enhance economic resilience, and support the long-term competitiveness of local businesses in the global market
