16/02/2019 - The Honourable Dato Seri Setia Dr. Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II, today welcomed business delegates from Brunei Darussalam and Lao PDR at the Business Networking Session. The event was held in conjunction with the State Visit of His Excellency Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith, the Prime Minister of Lao PDR to Brunei Darussalam on 16 – 17 February 2019.
The Business Networking Session was also attended by The Honourable Dato Seri Setia Dr. Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Mohd Hussein, Minister of Energy, Manpower and Industry; Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Deputy Minister of Energy, Manpower and Industry and Yang Mulia Dr. Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy (Economy). Also present were Permanent Secretaries from Ministry of Finance and Economy and Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry.
Representing Lao PDR at the session were Her Excellency Khemmani Pholsena, Minister of Industry and Commerce; His Excellency Alounkeo Kittikhoun, Minister to the Prime Minister's Office; His Excellency Dr. Kikeo Chanthabouly, Vice Minister of Planning and Investment; His Excellency Thongpath Vongmany, Vice Minister of Agriculture and Forestry; and His Excellency Phonethavy Boutdara, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Lao PDR to Brunei Darussalam. Also present were senior officials from Ministry of Planning and Investment and Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Lao PDR.
The event was also attended by businesses from both countries, representing various industries and business sectors. It provided an opportunity for companies to explore and exchange views on potential business prospects in both countries.
The session opened with welcoming remarks delivered by The Honourable Dato Seri Setia Dr. Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II. In his remarks, The Honourable Minister highlighted the expansion of bilateral relations across various areas, including trade and economic cooperation and encouraged both sides, especially businesses and entrepreneurs, to work together to strengthen ties.
Her Excellency Khemmani Pholsena, Minister of Industry and Commerce then delivered her remarks to the audience, followed by a presentation on investing in Lao PDR delivered by His Excellency Dr. Kikeo Chanthaboury, Vice Minister of Planning and Investment of Lao PDR. Mr. Soon Loo, Chief Executive Officer of the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) and Mr. Javed Ahmad, Chief Executive Officer of the Darussalam Enterprise (DARE) also delivered presentations on economic diversification efforts, Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) landscape in Brunei Darussalam and possible areas of collaboration between Brunei Darussalam and Lao PDR.
This was followed by a signing ceremony on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Brunei Darussalam (NCCIBD) and the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI). The MOU will establish a general cooperation framework between the two chambers to develop business relations and strengthen overall trade, investment and economic cooperation between both countries. The MoU was signed by Yang Mulia Sr. Haji Mohammad Hanafi bin Pehin Orang Kaya DiGadong Seri DiRaja Dato Laila Utama Haji Abdul Rahman, President of the NCCIBD and Mr. Oudet Souvannavong, President of the LNCCI.
